AARON HAWTHORNE accompanys Lon Chaney’s classic silent movie ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ at the Mighty Wurlitzer
Prizewinner in the American Theatre Organ Society’s ‘Young Theatre Organist of the Year’ competition in both the UK and the USA, Aaron Hawthorne is fast building a reputation as an organist and choirmaster in his native Glasgow and much further afield, too! Aaron has previously played the Howden le Wear Wurlitzer at several of our Young Organists concerts and in 2021 gave a solo online concert during the Covid ‘lockdown’ period which was very well received. He has gone on to develop the specialist art of silent movie accompaniment with great skill, demonstrating the original purpose of the ‘Wurlitzer Hope-Jones Unit Orchestra’ as it was originally known in providing a voice for the movies before they could talk themselves.
The famous character actor Lon Chaney (Snr.) can be seen in one of his greatest portrayals playing Victor Hugo’s Hunchback of Notre Dame in the 1923 Universal movie.
